Windows Vista Repair Tips and Tricks

Why is Windows Vista repair required? When Windows Vista was first introduced to the public, much criticism was made towards Vista because of its slow performance, stability, and compatibility issues with older software. Microsoft gradually made a comeback by releasing two service packs to make Windows Vista run much better and Windows 7 which will be released in October will put an end to the stability and performance issues.

However, Windows Vista is the current operating system that comes with all of the modern laptops and desktops and while it is generally stable, some users may bump into some trouble if they get infected with malware or install software that has issues with Vista. Therefore, Windows Vista repair methods are still necessary and by knowing these basic tips and tricks you can perform some Vista maintenance without the need of a professional.

Repairing Boot Errors using the Windows Vista Installation Disc

There are some rare occasions that the system falls into deeper errors that prevent the system from being booted. This can be caused by faulty installations and physical disk errors that are usually cured only if the hard disk is wiped clean followed by a reinstallation of the operating system and other programs.

If you do not want to go through that hassle, there may still be a chance to recover your system if you have your Windows Vista installation disc. The Vista disc comes with several recovery and repair tools that you can use by booting into the disc.

Choose the "Repair your computer" option and then make your way through the wizard until you see the "Command Prompt" option that you will need to click. Then type "Bootrec.exe" and press enter and then apply the /FixMbr option if you are having trouble booting. If the boot sector is damaged or if you installed an earlier operating system like XP, use the /FixBoot switch.

Windows Vista System Restore

Windows Vista also has the "System Restore" utility that was present in XP and ME and it did pretty well in solving problems by taking the system configuration back to an earlier state. Windows Vista further improves this feature by creating safer restore points every time critical changes are made to the system making it less risky to use. This is a great Windows Vista last resort feature if the installation of a driver goes wrong or an application causes a major problem afterwards. Using it is as easy as loading the "System Restore" utility and then following the wizard from there.

If you think your computer is very stable, you can eliminate some system restore points to save some disk space. You can also set the disk space that is allocated for system restore in the Control Panel. Just bear in mind that lower disk space means fewer restore points being made.

There are other Windows Vista Repair software programs that you can use to tune up your system and make sure that it runs in top performance. Just make sure that any 3rd party software that you use is fully compatible with Windows Vista to avoid issues.
