How to Bring a Slow Computer Back to Life

So many slow computer users these days are suffering from problems that are easy to fix, but simply do not get fixed because they do not know how to go about fixing it. Some people even believe that a slow computer is sluggish in performance because it is naturally slow and it pushes the limits of the hardware that powers the computer. There is no way to prove that until you try all the possible ways to increase the performance of your system on the software end. With these four basic steps, you can bring a slow computer back to life without laying a finger on your system's hardware.

1. Clear Disk Space by Uninstalling Programs

Since Windows 95, Microsoft offered a way for users to uninstall any programs that they do not need and most application developers agreed to make uninstallers to take advantage of it. If you think that you have too many programs on your system, you can take advantage of this feature (known as "Add/Remove Programs" on XP and "Programs and Features" on Vista/7). Take a good look at the list of programs that you have installed and remove the ones that you are either unfamiliar with or have stopped using. By doing this, you can clear up disk space that can increase the performance a little bit as well as clear some unwanted registry entries that may be cluttering your Windows registry which also contributes to slowdowns and instabilities.

2. Check your Computer for any Viruses Present

Viruses are other common culprits of the problem with some of them severely reducing the system to a crawl in performance. Find and eliminate any viruses by using a good online virus scanner and restart your system after to see if your system is a bit faster.

3. Perform a Registry Scan

Whether the performance of your system increased or not, it also helps to perform a complete Windows Registry scan to repair any damage left by applications that are already removed or damage previously caused by malware and adware. Look for a registry scanner that has a backup function for safety purposes and scan the registry in all areas to make sure more problems are fixed.

4. Use other Diagnostic Tools

Once you reach this step, your system should already be faster than normal. However, you can still squeeze out a little bit of extra performance if you perform other diagnostics. Fortunately, this step should be easy to do with any modern Windows operating system as it is already outfitted with useful tools like "Disk Cleanup" for clearing space and "Disk Defragmenter" for increasing file access performance. It also helps to scan your computer for physical errors as unmarked bad sectors can contribute to a slow computer too.

Any computer can be sped up a bit using the right tools and tweaks. If you are not satisfied with the results, your best bet would be a memory upgrade or simply getting a new computer.
