Things to Check before doing a Computer Monitor Repair
Computer monitor repair often raises the question of repair or upgrade. Screen display problems are among the many problems that average computer users encounter and they are one of the most annoying too because it is tough to detect the source of the problem. The cause of the problem is either due to a video card issue or a computer monitor problem. If the problem is the computer monitor, a monitor repair person may just save the day, but it is quite expensive if done successfully. Computer monitor repairs should never be done independently because of electrical dangers. The technique is to check certain areas before doing a computer monitor repair because the problem could be on the system end. Here are some things to check before asking for a computer monitor repair.
Check if the Monitor is really the Issue The easiest way to check if the monitor is really the issue is to try plugging in another monitor see if the problem is still present. If it isn't present, plug your monitor back in only this time ensuring that the connections are secure and see if the problem reoccurs. If the problem reoccurs, you are assured that you need a computer monitor repair. If you do not have a spare monitor, you will need to check other areas of your computer as well.
Check your Video Settings If your video card is improperly configured, monitor problems may arise that need fixing for the monitor to display properly. Start by checking your "Device Manager" and see if there are any problems with your display driver. A yellow overlay icon can hint that there are problems with the video driver and that can be resolved by either uninstalling the driver followed by an automatic reinstall. It is recommended though to find the latest driver versions to ensure that your video card is working at its best. After installing the driver, check your display resolution and experiment with other resolutions supported by your monitor. Do the same with the color quality and see if any combinations of settings solve the monitor issues. These options can be found in the "Display" Control Panel item for XP or "Personalization" Control Panel item for Vista or Windows 7. In the advanced display properties, check the refresh rate too and make sure that the "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" checkbox is checked so only the supported refresh rate options are shown. You can also experiment with the hardware acceleration sliders and see if it solves any problems.
Check the System in Safe Mode If you still cannot figure out the problem, boot into Safe Mode where a standard display driver is used and see if any of the problems exist. Restart your computer afterwards and see if the problem is fixed on its own. There may still be a possibility that the video card can be faulty. If you have an on board video card on your motherboard, plug your monitor there instead. After you have checked all those areas, you can proceed to a monitor repair or replacement.
