A discussion on Computer Drivers...

Working with Computer Drivers

A computer is a system wherein all of the hardware components in the system work together to deliver the experience those users can enjoy. However, these hardware components cannot act on their own without being instructed by the operating system. The operating system must interact with these components individually in order for them to perform properly. These special programs containing these instructions are known as computer drivers and it is important that you know these drivers because understanding the importance of these can help you solve basic hardware problems that you may encounter with your system.

Overview of Computer Drivers

Since the early versions of Windows, Microsoft has shipped Windows with all kinds of different drivers that are designed to allow the supported hardware to function right after the operating system has been installed reducing the hassle needed in installing them. However, there are a few flaws to this with the first being the fact that new hardware is made every now and then and it is impossible for Microsoft to have every single driver for every device. Without a proper certified driver, the device will either function erratically or not functional at all. There may also be some cases where older devices may not have the right driver for the right operating system leading to a similar problem in functionality.

Checking the Status of your Drivers

Before you start looking for drivers to these devices, you should first learn how to check for driver problems. Windows XP users can check by heading to the Control Panel in classic view and double-clicking "System". Select the "Hardware" tab and then click on "Device Manager". A list of categories should appear with the ones being expanded showing problems with an alarming symbol. Any devices with a warning symbol need attention. Even if no categories are expanded, you could be having driver problems if there is a device that is installed, but not being detected.

Updating your Drivers

There are several ways in updating your drivers with the first way involving the use of "Windows Update". This is a great feature that scans the Microsoft database for any updated drivers and automatically installing them after. If that doesn't work, visit the manufacturer's website and do a simple search on the model of the driver in question and then select the driver that matches your operating system. If your operating system isn't listed, you might find luck by trying another driver version.

Your last resort would be to use one of the 3rd party applications that have a bigger driver’s database. Driver Genius is a good program that can do the job swiftly, but if you do not wish to purchase an application for drivers, you can always search around using your favorite search engine or ask in a bulletin board for computer drivers. Updated computer drivers not only solve problems with your installed hardware, but also increase the performance of existing drivers if new versions are available. Therefore it is important that you keep your drivers updated at all costs to ensure that your system runs smoothly.
